Aesthetics Edinburgh

A Bit of History

It might seem a bit over the top to trace back 350 million years when talking about Edinburgh’s history, but that’s where it all kicks off. Back then, glaciers were slowly moving and eroding the landscape, which led to the formation of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano just east of the city centre. Today, it’s a hotspot for tourists, with lots of folks hiking its hills and soaking up stunning views of the city below. This is also where Celtic tribes first made their home in Edinburgh. The city really starts to develop when the Goddodin, who are the descendants of the Brittonic tribes that once clashed with the Romans, construct a small hillfort. They call it “Dun Eiden,” which means “the fort on the hill slope.” In 638, the fort gets taken over by invading Angles, who rename it “Eiden Burh.”
