Skin Cancer Awareness Month

In May we had Skin Cancer Awareness Month one of the biggest problems in the world is this horrible disease and we are writing to let people know the risks and the causes of Melanoma.

What Causes Skin Cancer?

Exposure to ultraviolet rays, whether from the sun or from tanning devices, is the main cause of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. These harmful rays can penetrate the skin and cause damage to the DNA within skin cells, leading to the development of cancerous cells.

Melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer, occurs when the pigment-producing cells called melanocytes mutate and grow uncontrollably. UV radiation is particularly dangerous as it can directly damage the DNA in these cells, triggering the mutations that lead to melanoma. Intense and intermittent exposure to UV rays, such as sunburns during childhood or adolescence, increases the risk of developing melanoma later in life.

For years, it has been clear that too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Despite this, a lot of folks still don’t take the necessary precautions, making themselves more vulnerable to developing skin cancer. However, there are ways to reduce the risk of skin cancer and not just by staying away from the sun.

It’s crucial to remember that there are easy yet very simple steps you can follow to avoid getting skin cancer. So, make sure to stay safe in the sun, whether you’re at home or traveling overseas.

One of the most important steps you can take to protect your skin from harmful UV rays is to always wear sunscreen with a high SPF, even on cloudy days. Additionally, wearing protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves can provide an extra layer of defence against the sun’s damaging effects.

Risk Factors

  • Taking medication to suppress the immune system post-organ transplant can raise the chances of developing skin cancers, particularly squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Contracting an infection like human papilloma virus (HPV) can also lead to squamous cell carcinomas, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.
  • Individuals with HIV have a higher likelihood of developing squamous cell carcinoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma, a cancer type that can affect the skin.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals found in plastic and chemical industries, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, is strongly linked to an increased risk of skin cancer.
  • Certain genetic mutations and a family history of skin cancer can also contribute to the likelihood of developing skin cancer.
  • Lighter-skinned populations tend to have a higher incidence of skin cancer compared to darker-skinned populations.
